There is a corner of Sicily that seems drawn by an artist, a village that, when seen from above, takes the shape of a man lying among the hills, his gaze turned towards Europe’s most imposing volcano. Some people see a starfish…but who cares? Welcome to Centuripe, the ‘balcony of Sicily’, a place suspended between past and present, where ancient history, art, and traditions intertwine, creating a perfect mosaic. We are in the province of Enna, in the heart of the island, in a land that never ceases to amaze: here, time seems to stand still, and every stone tells ancient stories of the civilizations that followed one another, leaving behind a precious legacy.

Centuripe: a journey through ancient history

Walking through the streets of Centuripe is like travelling through the sands of an hourglass. The village’s origins date back to the Siculi, a pre-Roman people, but it was with the arrival of the Greeks in the 4th century BC that Centuripe – then called Kentoripabegan to flourish as one of the most important centres of eastern Sicily.
The true peak of its development came during the Roman era: Centuripe became a prosperous and famous city, praised by Cicero and granted the title urbs clarissima, meaning ‘most illustrious city’, in recognition of its beauty and influence.
The evidence of that glorious past is still visible today: the Roman Aqueduct, with its impressive arches stretching across the hills, and the numerous archaeological finds discovered in the area tell the story of a rich, flourishing, and outward-looking Centuripe. It’s no coincidence that the village is known as the ‘Little Rome of Sicily’!

The village shaped like a man: a masterpiece seen from above

One of the most unique aspects of Centuripe is its urban layout. Just take a look at an aerial photo to be left speechless: the historic centre unfolds following a natural design that resembles the silhouette of a reclining man. This fascinating image has gone viral worldwide, attracting photographers, curious travellers, and lovers of unusual places.
Its streets stretch like arms and legs, while the houses follow the outline of the body, creating an almost magical harmony between architecture and nature. A detail that makes this village truly unique, perfect for those who love breathtaking views and remarkable stories to tell.
Centuripe offers one of the most spectacular views of Mount Etna, the giant that dominates the island. At sunrise and sunset, the volcano is tinged with hues ranging from pink to fiery red, creating a breathtaking spectacle.

Art and archaeology: an open-air museum

Centuripe is also a paradise for art and history lovers. Its Regional Archaeological Museum hosts one of Sicily’s most important collections, with artefacts that tell the story of centuries of civilization: ceramics, sculptures, everyday objects, but above all, the famous Centuripe ceramics, true works of Hellenistic art, characterized by elegant relief decorations and delicate colors.
Architectural wonders are not lacking: besides the Roman Aqueduct, it is worth visiting the remains of Villa Corradino and the village’s churches, such as the Mother Church of the Immaculate Conception, which rises majestically in the heart of the town.
Walking through the narrow alleys, among stone houses and scenic viewpoints, is like leafing through a history book under the open sky.

Authentic traditions and the flavors of Sicily

Centuripe is not just archaeology and landscapes: it is also a place that proudly preserves its popular traditions. Here, religious festivals are heartfelt events, capable of involving the entire community and visitors.
The Feast of Saint Prospero, the village’s patron saint, is one of the most awaited moments, with processions, music, and ancient rituals passed down from generation to generation. Even more evocative is the Holy Week, with its sacred performances, silent processions, and streets illuminated by torches, creating an atmosphere dense with spirituality.
And then there’s the cuisine, that speaks the language of the most authentic Sicily: fragrant olive oil, sweets made with almonds and honey, artisanal cannoli, and the intense flavors of the island’s local products. There is no better way to discover the soul of a place than by sitting at the table and letting yourself be conquered by its taste.

Why visit Centuripe?

Because Centuripe is a place that surprises, that moves you, that gives you the feeling of finding yourself in a hidden, precious corner of Sicily. It is the perfect destination for those who love to explore villages, for those seeking postcard-perfect views, for those who want to get lost among history, nature, and traditions.
Whether it’s for a day trip or a stop during a journey to discover Sicily’s lesser-known gems, Centuripe deserves to be experienced, photographed, and shared. Would you ever get tired of leafing through a book where every page holds a new surprise?
Let yourself be guided by its ancient soul, lose yourself among its narrow streets, and at sunset, climb to one of the many panoramic viewpoints: before you, Mount Etna will glow golden, and the village, with its unique shape, will make you feel part of a Sicily that never ceases to amaze.

Volare sull’arte (Flying above the art)

As already mentioned, the most curious feature of the village is its ‘human’ or ‘starfish’ shape. So, what better way to admire it than from above? The magic of flight meets the beauty of Sicily right here, where ‘Volare sull’Arte’ (Flying above the art) takes off, transforming the sky into an open-air art gallery.
The project was passionately conceived and promoted by the Mayor of Centuripe, Salvatore La Spina, and the local administration, in partnership with ‘Volare sull’Arte’, already active in Campania and now ready to conquer the soul of the island.
The operational base will be one of the most fascinating corners of Sicily’s interior: the Calanchi del Cannizzola, a lunar valley nestled between Mount Etna and the Enna hinterland. From here, a hot air balloon will rise, offering a new perspective on the landscape, suspended in silence and wonder.

«We believe in tourism that touches the heart and leaves a mark», says Salvatore La Spina, Mayor of Centuripe. «’Volare sull’Arte’ is a cultural challenge that starts from Centuripe to tell the story of Sicily from an extraordinary and unprecedented point of view. It is the result of teamwork between institutions, the local community, and innovation. Art, nature, and the sky become our calling card to the world».

Volare sull’Arte – Air balloon

The goal is ambitious: to enhance the territory, promote cultural and sustainable tourism, and create a network with local operators. Alongside the hot air balloon experience, special routes have been designed to discover the town. Centuripe will not only be the starting point for the aerial experience but also a place of hospitality and discovery.
Travellers will be able to visit hidden treasures such as the Dogana, Villa Corradino, the Regional Archaeological Museum, the Cathedral, and, until November 4th, 2025, the exhibition Futurism and Sicilian Futurists, celebrating modernity through the eyes of the island’s great artists.

«Flying above the Calanchi del Cannizzola is like brushing against the soul of Sicily», concludes Emma Taricco of Volare sull’Arte. «A light, sustainable journey, suspended between sky and silence. Every flight tells stories of land and authentic beauty, while Centuripe welcomes us with the warmth of a real Sicilian village, where every encounter becomes an emotion».
