Odd museums: Sicily off the wall
Sicily off the wall! Once you come here you can visit some beautiful cities, discover amazing landscapes and plunge into culture and traditions. But what happens if you want to do something…different? It’s time to learn more about the odd museums in the island. Let’s explore them with Sicilian Secrets.
What’s the most curious place you have ever visited in your life? If you always look for something peculiar during your trips, you cannot miss some odd museums in Sicily. Beyond the ordinary art, it’s definitely better (and sometimes more interesting!) to enjoy a bizarre collection. Here are three spots that Sicilian Secrets picked for you.
Museum of Anchovies
It’s just a small fish but important enough to have a dedicated museum. It’s the Museum of Anchovies in Aspra, created by Girolamo bros and Michelangelo Balistreri to protect the ancient art of fishing and salting of the anchovies. The first part of this museum is about the traditional Sicilian companies specialized in this industry.
Through pictures and old tins, it’s possible to find out many curiosities. The second part is dedicated to Sard’Art, in other words to the boats used till the ’60s to fish the anchovies. Some artists painted them and told the sea with their colors, all the shades of the ocean.
Museum of Illusions
The world is made of illusions. Here is the slogan of one of the odd museums in Sicily! Welcome to the Museum of Illusions in Trapani. If you are fascinated by the magic, this is the place for you. This is the only museum in Italy 100% dedicated to optical illusions that will amaze you more than any illusionist.
It was established in 2017, the main goal is to surprise the visitors with natural phenomena able to deceive the human brain. Have you ever heard about the Beuchet chair? And what do you know about the Ames room? This place is the perfect combination of art, architecture, elements of psychology, physics and optics and it doesn’t matter if you are an adult, you’ll be astonished and pleasantly entertained.
Museum of Toys
Odd museums or small dreamlands? If you want to go back in time and feel the emotions of your childhood, put the Museum of Toys in Sciacca in your bucket list.
It was established just five years ago and is a sort of time machine: ancient toys, a nice staff ready to greet and guide you among this incredible collection that will make you feel an excited Peter Pan.
